150th Anniversary of Cabo Santa María Lighthouse
The date of 1 September marked the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Cabo Santa María Lighthouse, one of the 12 existing in Uruguay and which is part of the 450 aids to navigation operated by the National Navy.
On 12 October, 1870, the Government granted the concession to the company Faros del Río de la Plata for the construction of the Cabo Santa María Lighthouse, in accordance with the law of 4 November, 1869 and it was inaugurated on 1 September, 1874. From 1896, at the end of the concession, the State assumed the operation and maintenance.
The Cabo Santa María Lighthouse stands on an elevation of the cape of the same name, which extends towards the sea forming a chain of dangers to navigation, consists of a circular tower of ashlar stone and has a height of 33.70 meters above the level of the base and 42 meters above sea level. with a light range of 20.5 nautical miles. The category of Fresnel lens system is of the first order type,
being the largest major light in service. Its dome is painted with red and white radial vertical stripes to improve its visibility from the sea, following the recommendations of the International Association of Marine aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities, which establishes norms and standards for the operation of lighthouses and aids to navigation.
We express our constant recognition and gratitude to the lighthouse keepers who have operated this historical heritage for 150 years, allowing this navigational aid to continue to guide sailors to a safe port and ensure safe navigation.
50 ANIVERSARIO DEL FARO CABO SANTA MARÍA
El primero de setiembre se conmemora el sesquicentenario del Faro Cabo Santa María, uno de los12 existentes en el Uruguay y que forma parte de las 450 ayudas a la navegación que opera la Armada Nacional.
El 12 de octubre de 1870, el Gobierno otorgó la concesión a la empresa “Faros del Río de la Plata” para la construcción del Faro Cabo Santa María, conforme a la ley del 4 de noviembre de 1869 y se inauguró el 1 de septiembre de 1874. A partir de 1896, al finalizar la concesión, el Estado asumió la operación y el mantenimiento.
El Faro Cabo Santa María se erige sobre una elevación del cabo de igual nombre, el cual se extiende hacia el mar formando una cadena de peligros a la navegación, consta de una torre circular de sillería de piedra y tiene una altura de 33,70 metros sobre el nivel de la base y 42 metros sobre el nivel del mar, con un alcance lumínico de 20,5 millas náuticas. La categoría del sistema de lentes de Fresnel es del tipo primer orden, siendo el más grande en servicio con el que cuentan nuestros faros. Su cúpula está pintada con franjas verticales radiales rojas y blancas para mejorar su visibilidad desde el mar, siguiendo las recomendaciones de la Organización Internacional de Ayudas a la Navegación y Autoridades de Faros, que establece normas y estándares para la operación de faros y ayudas a la navegación.
Expresamos nuestro constante reconocimiento y agradecimiento a los fareros que han operado este patrimonio histórico durante 150 años, permitiendo que esta ayuda a la navegación continue guiando a los marinos hacia buen puerto y garantizando una navegación segura.
