Navigating to 2050, a safe and sustainable maritime future

Irish Lights announced that it will host Navigating to 2050, a safe and sustainable maritime future on 15 and 16 November 2022 in Dublin Castle, Ireland.  

This two-day hybrid conference will bring together key national and international leaders to debate a safe and sustainable route to achieving 2050 goals.  Aligning with IALA’s strategic aim to foster the safe, economic and efficient movement of vessels, Irish Lights provides and supervises marine aids to navigation around the coast of Ireland.  

Irish Lights vision is to protect lives, property, trade and the environment by delivering next generation maritime services at the interface of navigation, technology, engineering and data management.  In recognition of the ever- increasing impacts from climate change, the requirements for mitigation and adaptation measures as well as the increasing use of digitisation in the maritime sector this conference aims to enable discussions on the challenges, opportunities and innovations required to safely navigate to a decarbonised maritime sector by 2050.

The conference will cover a wide range of relevant topics from decarbonising shipping, navigational safety, port transformation, offshore renewables, the regulatory framework for autonomous vessels, research, development and innovation.

Session 2, chaired by Mr Ronan Boyle Director of eNavigation and Maritime Services at Irish Lights aims to encourage discussion on how technology will change the future of navigation and what are the implication for safety and sustainability.

A suite of expert speakers have already been confirmed for the conference including: Mr Francis Zachariae, Secretary General of IALA; Mrs Maja Markovčić Kostelac Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency; Mr Neils Fredslund, Danish Maritime Safety Administration; Mr John Pottle, Director of the  Royal Institute of Navigation; Mr Jacob Terling of DG MOVE; Mr Simon Benmnett,  the Deputy Director General, International Chamber of Shipping; Carmen Aguilera of the European Union Agency for Space Programme; Ann Till of Ocean Infinity; Commander Nigel Hare of Trinity House and  Simon de Pietro, Director DP Energy Ltd and Co-President Ocean Energy Europe.

This conference is aimed as persons involved in the shipping and broader maritime navigation community, ports and regional maritime infrastructure sector, offshore renewable energy sector as well as government agencies and private sector.

Decarbonisation requires extensive knowledge building, investment and holistic approaches to allow for a brighter future not only for the industry but for society as well. The conference aims to identify the gaps and opportunities that will foster progress on this critical journey.
