The IALA World-Wide Academy (WWA) was established in 2012 and operates with its own independent funding.

The Academy is IALA’s global centre for maritime training and capacity building. Its mission is to help countries strengthen their systems for Marine Aids to Navigation (AtoN) and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) — essential tools for safe, efficient, and sustainable maritime navigation. Through specialized education, technical cooperation, and knowledge sharing, the WWA supports national authorities in meeting their international commitments under the UNCLOS and SOLAS conventions, in line with guidance from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and IALA.

The Academy is full part of continued collaboration between IALA, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) under the United Nations Delivering as One initiative. This partnership enhances global maritime capacity building and promotes consistent international standards in navigation safety.

Delivering operations for the benefit coastal states regardless of their membership within IALA,  The Academy’s success relies on the strong support of IALA members, including both national maritime authorities and industry partners, as well as foundations and other private organizations dedicated to improving maritime safety worldwide. Contributions may include financial sponsorship or in-kind support, such as hosting and logistical assistance for training programmes and workshops around the world.

The WWA gratefully acknowledges the sustained and significant contribution of the International Foundation for Aids to Navigation (IFAN), one of its most prominent supporters, along with Malaysia, Singapore, Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and France.
