World-Wide Academy programme

Information on the World-Wide Academy (the Academy) training programmes can be found via the following paghttps://academy.iala.int/wwa/training/

The capacity building programme of the World-Wide Academy has been highly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many technical missions and awareness events have been postponed. This has triggered the Academy to find new ways to stay connected with coastal States in need. A new programme of micro seminars and webinars allow us to continue with our important mission.

Upcoming VTS Webinars: all information via this link

Webinars on AtoN Technical Challenges:

AtoN Remote Monitoring – Effective performance monitoring during COVID-19 and after.

Buoy Moorings – Results of recent buoy mooring trials in Belize waters.

AtoN Light Characters – Selecting a suitable light character.

AtoN Maintenance – Reducing total cost of ownership.

Lessons learned from the IALA webinar on members response and provision of AtoN during the COVID-19 pandemic triggered the Academy to organize a series of webinars on AtoN technical challenges. Amongst other speakers, Mr Robert D. Lewald of the U.S. Coast Guard, explained how AtoN remote monitoring supported his organization during the restrictions of a pandemic. Not only during a pandemic but also after, remote monitoring will optimize the management of your AtoN availability objectives.

Upon an evaluation of the outcomes of Academy technical missions, it was found that many AtoN service providers would benefit from technical advice related to AtoN maintenance, light characters and buoy moorings. The sharing of good practice between IALA members and non-members will also provide an extra dimension to IALA publications on these subjects.

Each webinar include one or more Academy lectures delivered by experts from the IALA family. Participants were given an opportunity to ask questions and time will be allowed to discuss the topics at hand.

WWA Micro Seminars, a supporting boost after a technical mission

The Academy organizes national micro seminars with coastal States to discuss progress after a technical needs assessment mission. This is a welcome support for competent authorities or AtoN service providers on how to address recommendations after an IALA mission or to contribute to an IMSAS audit. For the Academy, it is important to learn how to further support each coastal State during this pandemic. The outcomes of such seminar could be that more training is necessary, a high-level meeting with the Academy is needed because of a change in management or a risk assessment will have to be conducted as the local situation changed.

Such a seminar takes places virtually between the competent authority or AtoN service provider, the relevant stakeholders and an Academy capacity building expert. The Academy provides the meeting link so apart from a few hours time, only a stable internet connection is needed. A brief progress report will be prepared by the Academy after the seminar which may assist the coastal State in overcoming its safety of navigation challenges. If your organization is interested in participating in such a micro seminar send an email to Mrs. Gerardine Delanoye, Capacity Building and Resources Manager, via gerardine.delanoye@iala-aism.org
