Master of AtoN Management

This training is intended for those with responsibility for the strategic management and implementation of AtoN services. Training is available through the IALA World-Wide Academy in cooperation with a global network of Accredited Training Organisations and by means of distance learning.

The Master of Marine Aids to Navigation Management qualification addresses key aspects of AtoN governance from a strategic perspective aimed at senior management personnel concerned with AtoN service provision or its supervision.

Course structure

The Master of AtoN Management course consists of two modules:

Module one
Covers areas of knowledge in which senior AtoN managers are required to have knowledge and skill related to governance and strategic management. 

Module two
A group task to produce a specific strategic analysis of an AtoN authority.

The course covers a range of topics based around the following broad subject headings:

Entry requirements

Participants are expected to be in possession of at least one of the following proven competencies or qualifications:

• hold the IALA Level 1.1 Marine Aids to Navigation Manager qualification with at least two years subsequent experience as an AtoN Manager; or
• have at least five years experience as an un-certificated AtoN Manager in an recognised AtoN service provider; or
• have at least five years experience in the maritime department of a national competent authority.

Participants who do not meet the proven competencies listed above may still be considered for entry to the course. In such cases, a comprehensive analysis of the proposed participants previous experience and qualifications should be undertaken to enable an assessment to be made as to whether they have the professional and personal attributes necessary to give a reasonable likelihood of successfully completing the course.

Assessment

Participants will need to fully complete a range of practical in-course activities along with the preparation of an outline strategic plan for the participants own or another suitable AtoN competent authority.

The minimum pass mark for each assessed element of the course is 50%.

Fees and registration

Residential courses last for a period of one week and distance learning courses should be complete within a period of less than four months if sufficient time is made available for study each week.

Course fees for distance learning start from €1,000 and fees for the residential course may vary dependent on the venue. Sponsorship may be available for coastal States in need of assistance to develop their AtoN capacity.
